2023 Inktober 18 - Perry Mason

Mason's name did originate from Perry Mason, a show of which my parents have been fond for years and Mom still watches it every night. Now I can't hear the character's name anymore without thinking of my Mason. Mason James Wiles would be a fantastic lawyer, one of the rare upright ones.

Plus, a mason is someone who specializes in building with stones or bricks, which makes my character's name all the more appropriate. He becomes famous (and beloved) for getting his kingdom out of the mud and making it even better than it was before, albeit with a tremendous load of outside help.

Most people shunned him because of his family name, holding him accountable for things his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents did. It got so bad that the Wiles were even more vilified than Beowulf was. His father-in-law wanted nothing to do with him because he was a Wiles, and that was essentially his logic, "He's a Wiles. He's scum. What more is there to say?"

Nero even let his irrational hatred override his love for his own daughter. It was enough to make some of Mason's naysayers say, "Well, that's a little harsh."

However, Mason proved everybody wrong and made the name "Wiles" desirable once more. Again, he couldn't have done it without help, but all that help would have been useless without his initiative in the beginning. He's so devoted to Reid and to Cecily because neither of them gave up on him, and he'll be forever grateful to two of Cecily's three siblings for going out of their way to help him when they owed him nothing. They helped him just as much for his sake as for their sister's sake, leaving Nero with a hefty meal of humble pie.

Years down the road, Mason's son falls in love with Reid's daughter, and when it turns out she feels the same way, their parents are more than happy to grant their blessings. Even Adela only wants her grandson to be happy, whatever he decides, and she's as amazed as anyone that her wish has come true after all. She got to join the Lactantius family tree when she wasn't forcing it so much.

Reid and Mason are blessed with many grandchildren, four of which they get to share with each other, and they get to retire when they're good and ready and they both live to a ripe old age. All's indeed well that ends well.

As for the TV show, I'd personally recommend it. I'm more partial to the Raymond Burr version; the latest version, the one that's darker and edgier, not so much.

Some episodes are better than others, and it may not be a 100% accurate portrayal of what happens in a courtroom, but they do a pretty good job at making you wonder who the perpetrator is, how all the puzzle pieces come together, how Perry Mason will crack this case. Almost like a 1950s Sherlock Holmes. And you'll never, ever forget the theme song. Theme songs are forever.

2023 Inktober 12 - Halloween Pup

Once again, work has been a killer. Today was supposed to be my day off, but I got a last-minute message this morning, asking if I could come in as soon as possible. I guess I can't complain too much, since I can easily walk to work (it's only a couple of blocks away) and thus I'm in a better position to come in at a moment's notice, and I could really use the money.

But holy cow, what a nuthouse. Customers just kept coming and coming and coming, and some were more patient than others. We were up to our necks in orders, and there were only so many hands on deck. I was practically chained to that cash register all day, and it's taking a physical toll on me to stay calm. I remember how one coworker once told me, "I don't know how you stand it."

Some customers had the nerve to ask what was taking so long with their order, as if they somehow couldn't see the big crowd around them. One guy told me to my face that he deserved an extra roll to go with his soup, "but I guess you'll charge me for that, too." Like it's somehow a mind-blower that most things cost actual money, like I somehow have any say in the prices.

One lady said, "No tip," out loud as she was pushing the button, as if I weren't standing right there and couldn't hear her perfectly well. Sure, I don't believe in forcing tips, but the least you can do is keep it to yourself, not rub it in my face, not make me feel like I'm somehow undeserving.

And all these people leave a terrible mess and a half behind, as if we didn't have enough work to do already.

I am not looking forward to the holidays.

So, today's Inktober entry is kept simple, too. It's really adorable to see how some people dress up their dogs, cats, even their horses for Halloween.

What kind of treats would you give a dog if it came up to you with a trick-or-treat bag or bucket?

2023 Inktober 11 - A Cat in a Witch's Hat

Had a long, rough day at work and I'm dead tired with my nerves pretty much shot. So, today, I decided to make it easy on myself with a simple silhouette of a cute kitty with a little touch of Halloween.

I had a black cat once. He was the second cat I've owned (Butterscotch was the third and Pippin is the fourth) and we called him Boo-Boo. He only lived about a year, but he was very cute and playful. A friend dubbed him "Vampire Kitty" due to his tendency to bite.

In the event that I ever own a black cat again, I've already picked out the name Boo-Boo Two.

My Inktober 2022 - 8 - Halloween Owl

Again, aiming for something simple that consumes less time, so I decided to aim for an owl today. Not one of my best works, but I've done worse.

And just like that, we're already one week and a day into this month and this challenge.

My Inktober 2022 - 7 - Cute Cats

I wanted something with a little less detail today, and for this kind of month, what better choice than a cute black cat? And why settle for just one?

I owned a cute black cat once upon a time, and the cat I own now is the biggest cutie I can call my own yet.

My Inktober 2022 - 2 - (Perry) Mason

My parents were huge fans of Perry Mason, the old version with Raymond Burr, and watched it religiously every night, alongside shows like M*A*S*H* and I Love Lucy and My Three Sons and The Andy Griffith Show

Even now, Mom likes to keep the old tradition going and we got her a few DVDs, so she doesn't have to wait until nighttime to watch it and she can pick any episode she likes.

Me, I'm what you'd call a "half-fan" of the show. Every so often I do join in, and some of those episodes are very interesting. They do a great job at keeping you guessing, showing several candidates for murder but it's impossible to tell which of them actually went through with the dark deed. The theme song is pretty cool, too.

Probably my favorite episode of them all is "The Case of the Nine Dolls." It's a surprisingly poignant episode, where Perry Mason helps out a little orphaned girl and it appears that everybody's out to get the poor kid just for existing. She makes me think of my own Mason Wiles, along with Erica and Peter.

(Images property of their respective owners.)

And speaking of Mason Wiles, yes, this is mainly where his name came from. Now I can't hear the title of the show anymore without thinking of him.

So, why not portray him as the famous criminal lawyer for Inktober?

My Inktober 2021 #23 - Halloween Owl

Just like with pumpkins, skeletons, vampires, witches, and ghosts, you can't have Halloween without an owl somewhere.

And, as I always say, the cuteness meter is never safe from me. Never.

My Inktober 2021 #22 - Halloween Horse

Holy smokes, less than 10 days left! Time does indeed fly when you're having fun, no?

So, we've done a Halloween feline and canine, therefore it's only fitting we do a Halloween equine as well.

A plain bedsheet ghost sounded boring, so I gave this horse a "Charlie Brown ghost" costume. Simple, yet charming.

My Inktober 2021 #21 - Halloween Dog

No worries; those are prosthetic heads (lightweight ones, too) for a cute little canine costume. Extra goodies for this good three-headed boy!

My Inktober 2021 #15 - Cute Halloween Unicorn (and Happy Birthday, Mom!)

Just like the adorable holiday unicorns I drew last year. I'll admit, I've kinda missed 'em!

On a side note, happy birthday to Mom. I'm finishing this early because we're going out to dinner tonight. We're going to Golden Corral (an all-you-can-eat buffet) and I got some double fudge brownies from work at half-price.

It helps that I scanned this last night and got off work a little earlier than usual.

Happy birthday, Mom. Love you bunches and bunches and bunches.

My Inktober 2021 #3 - Couples in Costume

I had a lot of fun with this one. Each costume is spot-on for each personality, too.

Romulus doesn't smoke, so that's why I gave him a "bubble pipe." I can hear him say it now: "Elementary, my dear Kyla." For that matter, Kyla would easily be Romulus's equal in this kind of field, if not his superior.

Ann would make a fantastic Meg, too; she would have an absolute ball with all those snarky lines. Tallis may be a bit of a dope, but just like Hercules, his heart's usually in the right place and he's really sweet...sweet enough to where it hurts Ann to realize how much she took him for granted. "This one is different! He's honest, and he's sweet! He would never do anything to hurt me!"

My Inktober 2021 #2 - Reid in Costume

Reid's costume was easy. Give you three guesses who he's posing as.

In the event that he makes it on screen, Daniel Radcliffe is my first pick for his voice. Which makes this kind of costume all the more appropriate.

My Inktober 2021 #1 - Mason in Costume

Well, mates, it's that time of the year again. And since I no longer trust the old #Inktober challenge, I'm relying on a challenge all my own.

So, here we go!

Mason may not have actual magic powers, but I think he would make for a real slick magician. He would certainly look dashing in a tux and top hat, and he does cultivate a nice acting streak; he's good enough to be in a show here and there.

I can see him performing "Abracadabra" or "This is the Greatest Show."

Halloween Unicorn

One last Halloween picture for the road, and another addition to my cute little "2020 Holiday Unicorn" collection.

My Inktober 31 - Fantasy Halloween Party

And thus concludes another Halloween, another month, and another "Inktober" prompt.

Hope it's been a good one for you, mates, all things considered. Much love to you all.

My Inktober 28 and 29 - Disney Trick or Treat and My OCs on Halloween

I had to work (it's getting crazy at Kneaders and I really hope my voice holds out for the holiday rush) and Mom had to borrow my laptop for most of the afternoon, but that's okay. This is only a day late, and it's just for fun anyway.

Imagine getting that kind of sweet loot!

And Mickey, Donald, and Goofy aren't the only ones decked out in cool costumes!

Here are Romulus, his brother Tallis, and their wives all strutting their stuff at a Halloween party; this definitely one of my favorites!

My Inktober 19 - Halloween Horse

A classic costume for a horse, especially a jet-black one!

It's amazing how creative some people can get with dressing their pets up for Halloween. I even once saw this really adorable "Cerberus" costume for a dog, where the owner attached two artificial heads to either side of their dog. If you didn't pay close attention, you almost couldn't tell which head was which!

My Inktober 10 - Figaro Pinocchio

Another suggestion from a friend. This is one of those movies I have seen a thousand times (never bothered to count, really) and I very much doubt I will EVER get sick of it.

My fan fiction with Pinocchio, The Guardian, which crosses over with Terence, continues to be my top story. No other story has been praised half so much to this day, and this is how some people got introduced to Terence. One fan even drew me some amazing illustrations that I still have in my private folder on my laptop.

The old story can still be found on my Fanfiction account, but I've started a little remake, too, "started" being an operative word: The Guardian: Rewritten

There is a sequel, On the Wings of an Angel, which I never quite finished. I posted the last chapter not long before my dad died, and then I just lost my mojo altogether and soon got caught up in other projects.

But it was almost over anyway, and I will go ahead and tell you how it ends: Pinocchio finally accepts Rhiella (he knew Terence loved him; he was just afraid and jealous that Terence loved Rhiella more, as if love's supposed to be some kind of competition, and the boy didn't like things changing so suddenly and so drastically when he was still getting used to things as they already were) and he and Terence have a real talk about Pinocchio's nightmares with Fabrizio. Terence already knew about those nightmares but he and Pinocchio deal with Pinocchio's grief the correct way, much more thoroughly, and soon those nightmares go away for good. Armando and Arietta continue to visit them and teach Pinocchio, and even become a sort of adopted family.

If I ever get around to a third story, Armando and Arietta end up adopting a little orphaned girl because Arietta can't have children of her own, and this girl becomes Pinocchio's playmate and sort-of-girlfriend. In the very end, Pinocchio finally understands what true love means, that there's enough love for everybody (and more besides) and he loves Terence every bit as much as he continues to love Geppetto. No parental figure exceeds the other.

And Jiminy Cricket does serenade them all with "When You Wish Upon a Star."

You know, since writing that first story, I've never really looked at the movie the same way again. It may not be "canon" but it's still fun and gratifying.

Inktober 2019 - Day 18

Now that I'm caught up, today's entries were a bit easier. I also made it easier on myself by not making either entry too detailed. Good art is not always super-intricate; some of the best art I've seen is made of very little detail and very basic shapes. Like Charles Schulz's Peanuts; there's something about those characters that's so simple and yet so charming.

So, in that case, here we go with "Inktober" 18: Misfit. I had a hard time making up my mind for a while, until I settled for some of the most famous "misfits" out there: Rankin-Bass's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Hermey the Elf. Once again, this is art at its most basic and most fantastic. The special effects may be nothing that special by today's standards, but the classic charm is still there, and what they lack in dazzling cinematography, they make up for in spades with the script and the songs. I love every single song on the soundtrack and can sing every single one on cue.

"We're a couple of misfits! We're a couple of misfits! What's the matter with misfits? That's where we fit in!"

"Fantasytober" 18: A Centaur in Costume. I easily had the most fun with this and this is definitely one of my most favorites! He never has to worry about a getaway horse because he's already his own getaway horse!

Never watched any of the movies or the old black-and-white series, but I'll bet everybody's familiar with Disney's TV theme song: "Out of the night, when the full moon is bright, comes a horseman known as Zorro! This bold renegade carves a 'Z' with his blade! A 'Z' that stands for 'Zorro'!"

Inktober 2019 - Day 12

I present to you good people day 12 of "Inktober": Dragon. Once again, I cheated a bit with this, but I still think it turned out pretty good, considering I'm not the best dragon artist in the world. One of my friends thinks this is a sea dragon stirring up a storm, and you know what? I really like that idea!

Day 12 of "Fantasytober": Dragon Participating in Halloween. I didn't even realize (at first) that "dragon" was the theme for the original "Inktober" as well, but oh well. I kept this one very cartoony but still cute; that's the kind of Halloween I prefer.

Snowbird 2026

Snowbird again  Got to go swimming this time.
